Which Country Has the Most Generous Work Allowance for International Students

On May 13, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that international students will soon be allowed to work off-campus for 24 hours per week while classes are in session. This new policy will begin in Fall 2024. Previously, international students in Canada were only allowed to work 20 hours per week, but the new policy will provide them with more opportunities to work.

International students will still be able to work full-time during scheduled academic breaks such as summer and winter holidays or reading week. This aligns with the policies of other top international student destination countries.

The United States allows international students with a valid F-1 student visa to work 20 hours per week on campus and up to 20 hours per week off-campus while school is in session. The United Kingdom permits international students to work 10 or 20 hours a week, with full-time employment allowed when class is not in session. France allows foreign students to work a maximum of 964 hours, which is the equivalent of 21 hours per week, and has separate policies for working at universities. Australia and Germany also have similar policies for international students.

The ability to work while studying is valuable for international students, as it allows them to earn money to support themselves and their families. In order to be eligible for off-campus work, international students in Canada must possess a valid study permit, be studying full-time at a designated learning institution, be pursuing a program that is at least six months long, and have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN).
