Are you a Teacher migrating to Canada?
If you are a teacher planning to migrate to Canada it’s important to know some of the challenges you will face and how to prepare for them.
Certification
To teach in Canada you must be eligible for a teaching certificate in the province where you want to teach. Teaching in Ontario for example means applying for teacher certification there and moving to another province (eg. Alberta), means applying for a separate teaching certificate there. Each province has its own rules and regulations.
Job Search
Most jobs for the start of the next school year are advertised beginning in mid-April until June. Waiting for the summer (July and August) to start your job search puts you at a disadvantage since most jobs would have been filled by then.
As is to be expected, jobs in the urban areas have a lot of competition and you are more likely to be hired if you are willing to work in rural areas which might be far away from home.
Your Resume
Because you are starting a new experience you will have to ensure an up-to-date resume that highlights your best qualities. It will be up to you to convince a potential employer that you are the best candidate for the position and that you have something to meaningful to contribute. Showing that you are up-to-date in current teaching trends and that you participate in a range of extra-curricular activities can go a long way in helping you get hired.
Finally, ask someone who is in-the-know for advice regarding your resume, cover letter and how you may best prepare yourself for a job in Canada. This small act may pay off in big ways.
