To apply for permanent residency!
Minister Mendicino has just announced a new pathway to permanent residency for over 90,000 essential workers and international student graduates who are actively contributing to Canada’s economy. Starting May 6, 2021, this pathway will allow eligible international graduates, who studied in Canada, as well as temporary workers in health care and other essential occupations, to apply for permanent residency:
Starting May 6, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will begin accepting applications for permanent residency under the following three streams:
- 20,000 applications for temporary workers in health care
- 30,000 applications for temporary workers in other selected essential occupations
- 40,000 applications for international students who recently graduated from a Canadian educational institution
All streams will remain open until November 5, 2021, or until they have reached their capacity. In order to be eligible, temporary workers need to have at least 1 year of Canadian work experience in an essential occupation. Recent graduates must have completed an eligible Canadian post-secondary program within the last four years.
The travel restrictions related to COVID-19 have hit Canada’s immigration system hard, and have significantly reduced the number of new arrivals going to the country. This is not the first time that the Government of Canada has made a bold move in inviting candidates with Canadian experience. Earlier this year, the Government of Canada invited over 27,000 candidates with Canadian experience through the Express Entry system.
