Is it possible to sponsor my sibling for Canadian permanent residence?
Family sponsorship for Canadian permanent residence is a significant category in the annual immigration levels plan set forth by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). While Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor loved ones to immigrate to Canada, siblings typically cannot be sponsored for permanent residence, except in rare circumstances.
Eligibility for sponsorship requires the sponsor to be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian in Canada, reside in Canada, agree to provide for the basic needs of the person being sponsored, and have sufficient income to support the relative being sponsored.
However, there is an exception known as the “lonely Canadian rule” that allows sponsorship of orphaned siblings under certain conditions such as being under 18, single, and with both parents deceased. If these conditions are not met, alternative options are available to bring a sibling to Canada

One option is to help your sibling find an educational course at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada, which can make them eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) upon graduation. Another option is to assist them in obtaining a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)-supported job offer, which could lead to a work permit and eventual eligibility for Canadian permanent residence through economic immigration programs.
Additionally, individuals from countries with bilateral youth mobility agreements with Canada may be eligible for an open work permit (OWP) under the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, allowing them to work in Canada and build eligibility for permanent residence.
It’s essential to explore these alternative routes for siblings who do not qualify for sponsorship, as they can provide opportunities to gain Canadian work experience and eventually obtain permanent residence through economic immigration programs.
While siblings generally cannot be sponsored for Canadian permanent residence, there are alternative options available to help them establish eligibility and eventually obtain permanent residence in Canada.
