It’s probably one of the biggest decisions you will ever have to make. But with so many things to consider, how do you go about choosing where you will pursue higher education? Here are 5 tips to help you pick the right school.
- Determine your goals.
What is your dream career? Which courses will help you attain it? The college or university you pick must have solid academic programs that fulfil these needs. Also, the wider the school curriculum, the greater your options will be if you’re not yet sure what you want to do, or if you decide to switch majors.
- Consider your personality and interests.
Your school experience will include your social life on campus and your extracurricular activities. Are you outgoing or reserved? Are you studious? Athletic? Big on social causes? Select a school that provides the right atmosphere and choices.
- Explore your financial options.
How will you pay for your education at college or university? Find out what scholarships or financial aid programs are available. If your mind is set on a costly ivy league school remember there are more affordable options which can offer you just as good an education.
- Choose a location that suits you.
Chances are you will studying in a different state, province or country. Be aware of geographical location and climate. Would you prefer living in a remote rural area or in a busy city? Can you cope with scorching summers? Freezing winters?
- Do your research.
Once you have a better understanding of what to look for, compile a list of colleges or universities that fit the bill. View their websites. Go on virtual tours. Get a feel for what each school is like. Then list their pros and cons to help you nail down your final choice.
