New Immigration Program Launched!

Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot
The Canadian government has just announced the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, an exciting new federal immigration program aimed at attracting new immigrants to rural and northern communities in Canada. This five-year initiative will help match employers who are experiencing an acute labour shortage with skilled foreign workers.

This program will operate similar to the Atlantic Immigration Pilot, which makes it easier for employers in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island to hire skilled foreign nationals. Once these foreign nationals are matched with an employer they can apply for their work permit and permanent residency at the same time.

The following territories and provinces are eligible to nominate foreign workers under this new pilot program:
* Ontario
* Manitoba
* Saskatchewan
* Alberta
* British Columbia
* Yukon
* Northwest Territories
* Nunavut

Presently, the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot is accepting applications from Canadian communities who want to participate. In the next few months more information will be released on how immigrants can apply to the program.

In 2017 approximately 285,000 people from all over the world migrated to Canada. Where did they go?
Where do new immigrants go?

Ontario is the most popular province with almost 40% of the immigrants (111,000 persons) heading to the province. Ontario is a popular choice since it has a strong economy and immigrants typically find jobs in several sectors including: finance, agriculture, technology, mining, education and government.

Quebec is the second most popular province with approximately 18% of newcomers (52,388 persons) settling in the province. Quebec is home to several sectors including: manufacturing, generation of electric power, mining, pulp and paper.

Alberta is the third most popular province with approximately 14% of newcomers (42,094 persons) settling in the province. Alberta is home to several sectors including: oil and gas, petrochemicals, interactive digital media and aerospace & defence.

British Columbia is the fourth most popular province with approximately 13% of newcomers (38,443 persons) settling in the province. British Columbia is home to several sectors including: agriculture, forestry, fisheries & aquaculture and film and television.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan are the fifth and sixth most popular provinces with approximately 10% of newcomers combined (14,700 and 14,680 persons) settling in these provinces. The provinces are home to several sectors including: transportation, oil and gas manufacturing, mining, forestry, energy, and tourism.

Atlantic Region (Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick province) attracted 11,682 persons, with 4% of newcomers settling in the region. The region is home to several sectors including: fishing, tourism, manufacturing and biotechnology.

Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut are the least popular provinces with approximately 1% of newcomers settling in these provinces. These provinces are home to several sectors including energy, film and sound, fishing and mining.

New Brunswick employers

Are you looking for work in Canada? The provincial government of New Brunswick has published the list of designated employers taking part in the Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP). The provincial government is now urging foreign nationals to contact these employers directly regarding vacancies they may have.

The AIP fast-tracks the hiring of suitable foreign workers by designated employers. Once a worker is hired, they will collaborate with a designated settlement service provider to develop a settlement plan. An eligible worker can then apply for permanent residency for themselves and their family.

List of Employers
New Brunswick has released a list of designated employers who are allowed to hire foreign nationals under the program. To take advantage of this information:

2) Explore their websites to see which employers might be of interest to you
3) Email your resume to the prospective employer(s) or apply to a job opening if available

Background
In March 2017 the Government of Canada, along with the four Atlantic provincial governments, launched the Atlantic Growth Strategy, a strategy to stimulate economic development in the Atlantic provinces. This strategy includes the Atlantic Immigration Pilot program, a 5-year immigration pilot whereby thousands of new immigrants and their families will be welcomed to the region.

Migrate to Canada

This a question we are often asked, our answer is it depends on factors that include your:

• Age;
• Education;
• Family connections in Canada;
• Place of study and
• Work experience

For example, if you:

• Are between the ages of 21 – 45 years old you may qualify under the Morden Community Driven Immigration Initiative
• Have an Associate’s Degree or higher you may qualify under the Federal Skilled Worker/Express Entry pathway
• Have a relative in Manitoba you may qualify under the Human Capital Pathway
• Studied in Canada you may qualify under the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program
• Are a writer, an employer in British Columbia can nominate you under the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program

So how long does it take to apply for permanent residency?

That depends on the pathway you choose, for example if you studied in Canada, it may take you 4 years of studying and working in Canada to eligible for permanent residency; whereas if you chose the Express Entry pathway it may take you between 6 to 12 months to receive a decision on your permanent residency application.
